Matilda was born to the second wife of Edmond Va'len. She would never know her mother, as Valerie Va'len died giving birth. Unlike her siblings, she had a plentiful childhood up until their father's untimely death. Rowan (Eldest Step-brother) and Athena (Eldest Step-Sister) worked hard to ensure she was taken care of, even after their father's passing.

Then after their brother's disappearance, Athena became the head of the household. She pursued the family trade and joined the Imperial Army to support Matilda while she studies at the College of Eòlas.

Matilda has always expressed an interest in medicine. She wishes to help others, especially the impoverished. She has a strong bond with her sister and they frequently write and visit one another.

The journey to Melrose was not an easy one, not with her duties, but Athena made it a point to visit as often as she could afford. Studying at the college could be mentally and physically taxing, and she wanted to make sure her sister didn't neglect her health. Per usual, she brought plenty of gifts, more than usual; Mostly books and trinkets that she was likely to love... Her heart felt like a rock sitting in her chest to think this could be the last time she ever saw her little sister. A touch of guilt too. Matilda wouldn't want her to fight, but it was a choice already made.
