The Zyphears

Before them, there was only chaos, bred by those who would sow the wicked seeds of tumult and destruction for the benefit of pending darkness, the demons seeping through their skulls. It was a time of concern, where one could not discern the truths from the lies, teetering between the fragile lines of depravity and self-sustenance. Many resorted to manners of savagery and desolation to fend off hunger and strife. Lives were lost and broken, subject to famine and disease, bloodshed and lust.

But there was hope.

The valiant among the population rose to combat the brutes of the night, their fangs sharp, each strike wrought with purpose and fervor, a desire for peace stronger than their fear of the tyrants. A fierce battle raged on, the sacrifices of many able to push back the evil that so desired to consume the light. And when, at last, their enemies fell, they made their vows.

TO PROTECT TO WEAK. TO CURE THE ILL. TO GUIDE THE LOST.

They are servants of the people, retainers of justice, and warriors of honor and virtue. They call themselves the knights, the templars, an order loyal only to their principles. Both men and women are invited to serve, only admitted after passing a wide spectrum of challenges and ordeals.

They rely upon one another, trusting in their collective wisdom. Discussions are paramount, for the knights believe that a steady tongue is equally important to a sharp fang, if not more so. As such, polite dissent and open-mindedness is encouraged, for there are many interpretations to carrying out their tasks. Some will specialize in medicine; others in war. Some are record keepers, tellers of stories and accounts, information archived away in the recesses of their minds. However, all must adhere to their vows.

They are not to incite judgement or do harm unto others unless it is in the defense of the innocent; they are to advocate for the poor and mistreated. They may commit to any king, so long as they are true to the principles to which they are faithful.

Among these knights are the Zyphears, a noble line of wolves, descendants of the valiant who drove away the darkness so long go. A wildfire, sparked by the lightning in the dry season, burned through their homeland, scorching all in its path. Many perished, lungs filled with smoke and dust. Little did they know, that five siblings survived. They arrive in Rionnach individually, seeking their destinies across the horizon.

The five Zyphear siblings are listed here in descending age: Talfor, Mirah, Rafiel, Edric, and Lilith. A brief summary of family dynamics are listed in the history section of each character. Whisper plays Mirah; Yahtzee plays Rafiel; and Naviira plays Lilith.

Appearance: The Zyphears are known for their dashing-good looks. Talfor is no exception. The lightest portion of his coat, consisting of his underbelly, lower legs and paws, tip of the tail, and muzzle are a sleek off-white, almost like powdered, silken snow. His base coat is like a dark ash, a flawless combination of greys and browns. An even darker color, like a shadow, saddles his back and covers his face, his two eyes, like a mask; it also graces the tips of both ears. A smudge of grey kisses his lips, right below his nose.

Most important is his stance, his proud carriage. He is a fearsome warrior, and it shows, muscles rippling beneath his large frame. His paws are huge, legs thick, excellent for gripping the ground, even acting as weapons, if necessary. His eyes penetrate, molten gold in color, his stare cold, should he offer it. Talfor holds his head high, always, the combination of his eyes and mask making him appear disgruntled.

Personality:

[Courageous, Warrior-like, Resilient, Serious, Responsible] You can derive more from the information I’ve provided. He can be good/terrible with women (it’d be hilarious if he was terrible even though he tries, lol), and the direction of his devotion to the knights is up to you.

History: As the eldest of the Zyphear litter, Talfor is both the victim and honor of birth order. He took his responsibility seriously, learning all that he could from his father, Orex Zyphear, one of the leaders of the knights. He was taught the art of war, of fighting in single-hand combat, mentored in practice of making quick resolutions based off of what information was available to him at the time. As such, he was formidable and calculating opponent, though he is known to lose his temper from time to time, a quality Orex tried to train out of his son. Alas, Talfor is still young.

Nevertheless, he is a warrior at heart, bound by his honor code. He would much rather fight first and ask questions later, much to the chagrin of some of his siblings. Many wolves, however, see this as strength as they desire a leader capable of making difficult decisions with confidence.

He has a decent relationship with his sister, Mirah. Mirah is mature and reasonable, and although he scoffs at her vanity, he respects her guidance and opinion.

Talfor has a strenuous relationship with brother Rafiel. Although Talfor is the eldest, has the most responsibility, and trains the hardest, Rafiel breezes through his studies, his golden tongue and natural charm serving him rather than effort. Talfor loathes how carefree Rafiel is, sparing no jabs whenever he sees him goofing off.

He is also known to fight with brother Edric, who far and above values intelligence and scholarly pursuits over sheer strength. Edric is not intimidated by Talfor in the least and will not back down from a verbal spat.

He has a very good relationship with the youngest, the adopted Lilith, who is sweet and makes an effort to create harmony. He cares not that she is not a Zyphear by blood and will go out of his way to offer her assistance in whatever way possible — he is most protective of his precious, little sister.

To his knowledge, his beloved parents perished in the great fire. Although he misses them dearly, he feels it his duty to carry on the name of the Zyphears and the tenants of the order of knights. He is generally impatient and restless, ambitious and serious.

Appearance: Edric is a blend of perfect alloys, drenched in rich mahogany and inky black. The darkness runs across each of his four legs, over his face and eyes, and his ears — and finally, the very tip of his tail. The brown, a fine mix of sable and coffee, sprinkled through with hazelnut copper, graces most of his head, down his neck, and over the remainder of his body.

He has no particular love for food, viewing it as only sustenance, and as such, he is thin. He is of average size and would easily be ten or twenty pounds heavier if he only enjoyed his meals. Instead, he prefers to spend his hours poring over the pages of hard-wrought books or scripts or studying the ancient art of taming fire. Still, Edric is not malnourished, and his coat is beautifully soft to the touch as it hugs his frame.

His eyes are perhaps his most splendid feature, a verdant green, like emeralds freshly unearthed and then polished. They gleam in any light, no matter how little, reflecting his thoughts and emotions. He is expressive, distaste and fascination written upon his face — it is not difficult to decode what he is thinking at any given moment, nor does Edric make much effort to hide his thoughts, especially his disdain. [Sly, Introverted, Sharp, Abrasive, Reserved] You can derive more from the information I’ve provided. Edric is abrasive and critical, and has a hard time with relationships — but he has best intentions at heart.

History: Edric is the fourth born, the last of the natural litter, and as usual, he is the smallest. He is by no means a runt, but he is far closer to his mother in size than his titan of a father. One would imagine that he’d find his role as a knight unfulfilling, boorish compared to his passion for learning, but that is quite the opposite. Edric enjoyed lessons in nearly any topic, and even though his elder siblings dominated him in the sparring ring, he had his advantages in other subject matters.

His father, Orex Zyphear, saw great potential in him as a boy. Even if he did not understand the ways of fire, he saw that Edric was calm and collected, strategic and cautious. As such, he began his training as a fire tamer, mentored by the most skilled of their order. Edric consumed his lessons, fascinated by the silent flames, the way they moved, their heat, their ability to reproduce. He was also taught to remember information, his memory enhanced by hundreds of hours of practice, utilizing techniques handed down from generation to generation — in other words, he is a living, breathing archive of information. He knows history and family trees, wisdom and follies, and he only has but to retrieve them from his mind to recite stories and chronicles by memory.

He has a poor relationship with his oldest brother, Talfor. He thinks Talfor is an idiot who uses his brawn far more than his brain, while Talfor believes the opposite of him.

He has a tenuous relationship with Mirah, whom he believes needs to mind her own business. He respects her knowledge and expertise in healing and poisons, but she is also far too vain.

Edric often doesn’t know what to think about Rafiel, who is carefree and rather worry-free — but he is talented, and his natural gifts have gotten him far. In other words, he gets the job done well enough. He thinks Rafiel flirts too much with women.

He gets along just fine with Lilith, the youngest adopted sibling, though he wonders what can possibly make her so kind after such a rough start in life.

Despite his cantankerous tendencies, Edric very much believes in the order of knights and their responsibilities to the world. He would, in fact, jump into a river to rescue a drowning someone, after analyzing the situation, of course, saving his scorn and harsh words until after they are safe and breathing on the shore.

It was a wildfire that drove them from their home, destroying all life in its path. Edric stayed as long as he could, hoping to use his knowledge to put out the flames. It was too much, and he fled to the waters of Rionnach, hoping for a chance at a better tomorrow.

Exhaustion. He could feel it in every muscle. His legs burned, his chest ached, and that damned cough! He could still taste the smoke on his tongue, it was sour and made him curl his lip in distaste. The male had lost sight of his siblings in the chaos, but he expected they would have made it out. In fact, he was certain Mirah would have been the first to flee. Her precious fur would have been on the line. But Lillith, with her kind gentle soul would have probably lagged behind, doing what she could for anyone who needed her help. He never really understood that about her, how she could put others before herself. Edric couldn’t help but feel a zap of anger at his younger sister. Her kindness would be the end of her, he was certain.

Slow methodical steps carried him across the lands until he stood beneath a structure of a kind he had not seen before. Not seen, but had read, he realised after a moment. A castle, if his memory served him correctly. The structure appeared to be abandoned, it’s walls crumbled and cracked. The scholar paused for a moment, considering the danger that was presented by the structure before deciding that he would venture forward, and simply keep an ear out for any changes that could alert him to a collapse.

After traversing the perimeter of the dilapidated structure, Edric spotted an entrance that he could squeeze into. Thanking the stars that he had inherited his mother’s stature, he wriggled through the opening, pausing to allow his eyes to adjust to the dim light. Light grey dust settled against his fur and he huffed, expelling some from his nose. Inside were piles of rotting wood, interspersed with a range of materials. Poking up from between a few splintered planks poked the corner of a book. Gently, the knight pulled the book out, holding his breath to avoid breathing in more dust. With a light paw, Edric opened the book to a middle page and studied the fading type. A fairytale, he figured, green eyes flickering over the words. It described a human girl, with golden hair, and something they called porridge. While the story was fascinating, Edric soon lost interest and stood, leaving the book laying open on the floor. Surely there would be something useful here.
