Rafael is wiry, with deceptively strong muscle hidden beneath long, sinewy limbs. He walks with a soft, limber step. His iced eyes are observant. Those eyes are his most expressive feature. A little furrow in his brow can often be seen, though it is nearly always unclear whether it is exasperation, dislike, worry, or something else entirely.

Rafael is a quiet and dagger-sharp. When he speaks, he sticks to the facts and does not fluff up his words to make others more comfortable. He does not dance around social niceties -- not because he can't, but because he detests falsehoods in any form, and finds the whole business worthless. He is known for instantly and somewhat harshly judging others on their wit and merit. Little slips beneath his ever-watchful radar, and he is quick to nip a potential acquaintance in the bud if they do not meet his ever-changing qualifications.

He is extremely intelligent and organized. Some might joke that he just "likes things the way he likes them". With Rafael, it is not simply a saying but a code to live by. He will meticulously prepare his days, his jobs and his hobbies until they exactly suite him. His interests change like the wind, and he is voracious for knowledge. He is a fan of philosophy and a proponent of the arts, and he can tell you that in about three different languages, if only he had the desire to. His impatience means he's more likely to throw the book at you than to open it to the right chapter and explain why you are wrong.

One passion in which he is steadfast is his devotion to his siblings. He is the typical oldest brother, roughing them up when they annoy him but never allowing anyone else to lay a finger upon them without his permission. He is especially doting on his littlest brother, Nicodemus, who sees a side of him that others rarely do.

Rafael was born the eldest of three brothers, the first son to Elias Vanadium and Orlaith Kinnaird. He came into the world strangely quiet, and as soon as his blue eyes opened, they drank in the world with hunger.
