But darkness breeds darkness. Adrian has never been one to maintain close bonds, and has struggled with developing a human connection with others. He keeps all he meets at arm's length, his brother and parents the only exceptions. However, manipulation is not beneath him - and neither is violence.
The Dumonts found another way to survive: becoming tradesmen. However, rumors circulated quickly that this was a mere front for some more nefarious activity. Le Milieu, as they came to be known colloquially, did not deal so much in meat trading as they did in...pharmacology. Their underground specialty was elite forms of poisons that they sold for an immense profit in the black market. Using the tradesmen occupation as a front, Le Milieu quickly expanded its crime syndicate, and Mathias and Adrian were both inducted into the fold as third generation criminals.
But crime -- even the white collar variety -- comes with a price. Le Milieu's secret was at least partially uncovered, and as members of the Imperial Army stormed the castle, the members fled. Mathias and Adrian have now made it into the Highlands and are fugitives of the crown, and of the Le Milieu's patrons who are out of poison or profit while the dust settles. It is unclear whether the Army believes they survived the raid, or whether their own family knows they live. Mathias and Adrian do not intend to go to prison, however, so the Highlands now offer their best bet at survival.
