Myoga Hinata and his sister, Sakura, were raised in a faraway nation in a family of spice traders. Their father, Himawari, was a strict and cunning businessman. Their little spice empire had grown from humble beginnings into a prolific business, though they still struggled to compete against other families looking to make a name in the popular trade.
Their culture was one steeped deep in tradition and lore. Himawari was known to school his children in ancient stories of the past, but he was also equally likely to give them a scuff over the head if they acted impolitely or forgot to do their chores. Their mother, Akane, was made of a softer cloth, but it did not mean they got a reprieve from their work from her. She was just as diligent with the family business.
In preparation to set Hinata and Sakura into the world to trade, Himawari and Akane began to teach them the common tongue, much different from their native language. Sakura was a quick study, but Hinata abhorred his lessons, and often tried to skip or not pay attention during them. As such, his grasp of the common language is slim, and he relies on his sister whenever he encounters a native speaker.
When the siblings turned of age, Himawari sent them on a pilgrimage to Rionnach, a nearby nation where they hoped to expand their trade. But during the heat waves that scored the country, Hinata and Sakura found themselves quite stuck, impoverished, thirsty, and sick. They were unable to sell their stock and struggled simply on survival. Even when the heat wave was over, however, they knew they could not return home. Their family was proud and resource-minded. They knew they would be seen as failures if they did not complete their task of setting up a base of operations for trading in Rionnach proper. So here they stay, strangers in a strange land, unable to return home until they embrace the very place they do not fit in.
